The Chariot is card seven of the Major Arcana and the card of forward motion. It represents victory through determination: holding competing forces together and steering them in one direction.

When The Chariot appears, you are often in a position to move ahead, but only if you take the reins. It favors focus, confidence and self-control. The challenge is not a lack of power but a lack of direction, and once you choose where you are going, the card says you can get there.

The Chariot upright meaning

Upright, The Chariot says push forward. You can overcome obstacles and reach your goal through focus, discipline and confidence. It often appears when competing priorities need to be pulled into one clear direction. Decide what you want, commit, and keep moving even when it is hard. Travel and literal journeys are also traditional meanings.

The Chariot upright in love & relationships

In love, The Chariot can mean pursuing what you want with confidence, or working through challenges together. It favors taking action rather than waiting. Make sure you are both steering toward the same place.

The Chariot upright in career & work

At work, this is a winning card: ambition, competition, promotion and achieving goals through hard work. It rewards focus and persistence.

The Chariot upright in money & finances

Financially, The Chariot supports disciplined effort toward a goal: paying down debt, saving for something specific. Stay on course.

The Chariot reversed meaning

Reversed, The Chariot can show momentum stalled. You may be pulled in different directions, lacking motivation, or trying to control things that cannot be controlled. Sometimes it shows too much force: pushing so hard that it backfires. Step back, decide what actually matters, and steer from there.

The Chariot reversed in love & relationships

In love, the reversal can point to power struggles, moving too fast or wanting different things. Slow down and check that you are going the same way.

The Chariot reversed in career & work

At work, it may show frustration, setbacks or burnout from forcing things. Re-plan rather than pushing harder.

The Chariot reversed in money & finances

With money, it can show impulsive decisions or losing track of a goal. Return to your plan.

Is The Chariot a yes or no card?

Yes upright · Maybe reversed

Upright, The Chariot is a strong yes when you are willing to push for it: success through focus and effort. Reversed, it is a maybe, because conflicting goals or loss of control are slowing you down.

The Chariot symbolism and imagery

In the Rider–Waite–Smith card, a warrior stands in a chariot beneath a canopy of stars. He wears armor decorated with crescent moons and holds a wand, but no visible reins. Two sphinxes, one black and one white, sit in front of the chariot. A walled city stands behind him.

The black and white sphinxes represent opposing forces, such as heart and head or desire and duty. The charioteer controls them without reins, through willpower alone. The city behind him shows what he has left behind as he moves out into the world.

The Chariot in a reading

In a past position, The Chariot often marks a hard-won success. As an outcome, it suggests victory if you stay focused. Next to the Six of Wands, success is public and celebrated. Next to the Two of Swords, indecision is the real obstacle: pick a direction and the momentum will follow.

Notable combinations

  • The Chariot + Six of Wands: Victory and recognition for your effort.
  • The Chariot + Strength: Willpower balanced by patience. Success without force.
  • The Chariot + Two of Swords: Momentum blocked by indecision. Choose a direction.
